Chapter 33

The Wednesday Zirconia Killed Xavier

Zirconia was in the lobby, luring the Darnells into a janitor's closet when something unexpected happened.

Xavier Batista came running into the lobby with messy hair.

But she didn't see him, because he came in a few minutes later than he had the previous two times.

This time, her back was turned to the front doors.

This time, he ran up quietly, on the tips of his toes.

She could have heard him if she'd been listening, but she hadn't been listening. She had been overconfident about having scared him off.

Not knowing she had an audience, Zirconia walked the Darnells into the closet, and put them to sleep.

So far, everyone was going according to plan. This time, without Xavier distracting her, she would get everything perfect. Today was the day that would lead to tomorrow.

Suddenly, there was a body against hers. Arms wrapping around her. Arms squeezing her.

It was Xavier. She knew instantly.

The next thing happened almost instantly.

She would have had enough time and awareness to control her reaction to his attack.

She didn't have to throw him across the lobby.

But she did.

He landed on a couch, where she'd meant for him to land.

It knocked the wind out of him.

“It's just me,” he said, gasping to refill his lungs. He held up both hands as he righted himself. “It's me, Xavier. I work with your sister.”

“What are you doing here?” She didn't have to act surprised. She was surprised. Most people who got bitten by a vampire were... what were the lyrics of that song? Once bitten, twice shy.

He moved toward her instead of fleeing. Apparently she had not bitten him or flung him across the lobby hard enough.

“I need your help,” he said.

“No,” she said. “Go away.”

“You have to help me.”

“Go away.” She put a strong wave of magic into her command. “Be gone from my sight.”

He kept closing in on her.

He wore the amulet.

He was late to their rendezvous because he'd stopped by the lounge and gotten the protective necklace from his friend already.

“Leave now or I will bite you,” she said.

“That's exactly what I want,” he said.

She was speechless.

He got close enough to grab her wrist, and he did. He squeezed it as he looked into her eyes.

“I consent,” he said. “Turn me. I want to be like you.”

She yanked her wrist away easily.

He wore the amulet, so he wasn't susceptible to her enchantments, but she still had her other skills. He was a strong young man, but he had nothing on her supernatural strength.

“Turn me,” he said.

“No.” She picked him up and flung him onto the lobby couch again. Harder this time.

He got up and came right back at her.

“I want this,” he said through gritted teeth. “Come on. Don't you want to taste my blood?” He held his forearm to her nose.

He was nervous. He smelled acrid, of sweat, but his blood was rushing to the surface and it did smell good.

“You don't want this,” she said. “Leave here now, and don't come back again.”

“I won't go.
